Customer work · 2021

Custom rackmount replacement computers.

In 2021, I built custom rackmount computers for a marine electronics company. The customer knew my work from computers I had built in an earlier role and came back to me for replacement systems.

I used Rosewill rackmount cases and selected the hardware around the connections each computer needed. These systems included three Ethernet connections, four RS-232 serial ports, and remote-start capability. Separate SSD and hard drive storage provided space for Windows and the customer’s data.

The i7 systems used Intel Core i7-10700K processors, 16GB of RAM, 240GB SSDs, 2TB hard drives, and Windows 10 Pro. I also completed a 64GB memory upgrade for one of the systems.

These were customer projects through KPL Custom Computers, separate from my earlier employment.

One of my own builds

My own gaming PC.

Built September 2021 · Personal build

I built this PC for gaming and everyday use in September 2021. My previous system, built in October 2016 with an i5-6600K and ASUS GTX 1080, is still running too. I liked that ASUS card enough to stay with the ROG Strix line.

During the 2021 hardware shortages, the Newegg Shuffle gave me the opportunity to buy an ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 and Z590-E Gaming WiFi motherboard bundle. I paired them with an Intel Core i9-11900K and 64GB of RAM.

Two Samsung M.2 SSDs keep Windows and my Steam games on separate drives, with a 4TB hard drive for additional storage. A Noctua NH-D15 air cooler in a Corsair 5000D Airflow case has worked well for me, and the PC is connected to an APC battery backup.

I also use two mirrored 4TB drives in an external enclosure for important files. That provides redundancy if one drive fails, but doesn’t replace a separate backup.

Five years later, this computer still handles everything I throw at it.

This is my personal build from 2021. The parts reflect what I chose at the time, rather than what I’d necessarily recommend for a new build today.
